Eventually a 20 minute, heavy rocking and shushing routine became the only way to get him down…and guess what would happen when he woke up? Yep, we had to do it all over again. I began to dread sleep. I watched the clock with overwhelming anxiety as bedtime approached. My mind would race with questions of how long it would take to get him to sleep and then how long until I was right back in there feeding, rocking, and shushing…meanwhile I was EXHAUSTED.
I needed a change. I needed help. I needed sleep. Despite my exhaustion, anxiety, and desperation, I could not, WOULD not, leave my baby alone to cry himself to sleep. No amount of heavily poured glasses of wine in the world could bring me to let him cry it out.
